Rights and Entitlements to the Marginalised

The Urban Cell works with women in the peri-urban slums of Bhuj on rights based issues and entitlements. Be it land rights, female sex workers' rights, caste-based issues, women's health or non-traditional livelihoods. 

  • Jamin Awas Manch : People living in Bhuj city should be aware of their right  to their land  and apply for land ownership under the rules of the government.
  • Samvedna : Destigmatisation and Strengthening Identities of female sex workers
  • Kishori Sangathan : Move ahead from self to society as a gender transformative approach for adolescents.
  • Caste Based Communities : Bringing young girls and women into the decision making processes of their communities, so that they are able to tackle violence, exercise their choices and redefine laws
  • Caste Based Communities : Build a gender-inclusive space in traditional legal redressal systems
  • Caste Based Communities : Encouraging the community to revisit their customary laws and practices and reformulate them to safeguard the autonomy and dignity of women.
  • Jamin Awas Manch
    • Organise slum dwelling residents to fill application forms to submit to the Collector’s office for land requisition
    • Jamin Awas Manch as the name suggests is a platform for urban slum dwellers to dialogue with and demand from the Collectors office, the ownership rights of the land they have been inhabiting for generation
  • Samvedna
    • This program seeks to create a safe and organised environment for female sex workers, where they can assert their right to dignity, entitlements, space in the cities, and a violence free environment.
    • Organise and build capacity of sex workers at the block level, on health, financial literacy and leadership skills
  • Health
    • Organise general health check up camps in urban slums for women and children.
    • Organise gynaecological check-up camps for women who do not have access or awareness about women’s health issues

 

  • Kishori
    • Training on non-traditional livelihoods like chhakda driving. 
    • Trainings on gender, social perspectives and sexual and reproductive rights (SRHR)

 

  • Caste-based Communities
    • This program delves with specific caste-based communities to help them realise upon present traditions that endanger the safety and dignity of women.
    • Meetings with women and leaders of the community to build rapport and dialogue about the issues facing them. 
    • Organise meetings and trainings with women to organise them to take up their own issues and work for their rights.
  • 140 female sex workers organised
  • Created a drop-in centre for sex workers to exchange and engage in their issues
  • Collective of 17 sex workers (as core members) formed
  • 42 cases resolved by the decentralised centre run by Devipujak community
  • 15 member team from Devipujak community to help Jatt community address their issues
  • 3 Paralegals trained from the Devipujak community
  • Formation of committees of 4 areas to take land rights agenda ahead
